A missed opportunity in Kansas City, as the A’s won one of only three games, just as they did in real life. Oakland was shut out in both losses and overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit against KC’s ace in the middle game to pick up one win. After 131 games, Oakland remains three wins behind pace.

August 25: The A’s managed just one hit off Mark Gubicza, a single by Dave Parker to lead off the second inning. He made his way to third base with two outs but no further. Only one other Oakland runner made it to second base. Kansas City got a first-inning run after Kevin Seitzer led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly. That was all Mike Moore would allow in his seven innings of work, but KC added three in the eighth, two on a Bo Jackson home run.

August 26: Trailing 4-0 after the first inning and facing Kansas City ace Bret Saberhagen, it didn’t look good for the A’s. But somehow they lit up Saberhagen for eight runs in six innings, including two-run homers by Rickey Henderson and Dave Parker in the third and fifth innings, respectively, and a two-run single by Carney Lansford in the sixth. Oakland’s bullpen gave up no runs and two hits in the final 6+ innings.

August 27: Oakland’s offense once again let the team down, as Tom Gordon scattered five hits. Bo Jackson’s second home run of the series came in the seventh inning and was the game’s only run. The A’s put runners into scoring position in five innings, including the ninth when Stan Javier hit a two-out triple. But KC closer Jeff Montgomery came in to get the final out.
