The A’s opened up September by taking two of three against the Brewers, matching their real-life results once again. They needed a sweep but couldn’t score in the middle contest. There weren’t many hits or runs in this series. Bob Welch and Storm Davis both earned their 14th victory. After 137 games, Oakland remains three wins behind pace.

September 1: The A’s managed only two hits, and they came on consecutive at-bats in the fourth inning. After Rickey Henderson led off with a walk, Carney Lansford singled, and Jose Canseco followed with a three-run homer. Those turned out to be the only runs of the game. Bob Welch repeatedly pitched out of trouble, but gave way to the bullpen after the Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Rick Honeycutt got the third out, and the A’s held on.

September 2: The A’s doubled their hit total in the next contest, but couldn’t bring anyone home. Oakland loaded the bases in the first inning and had runners on first and third in the fourth, but couldn’t push a run across. Tom Filer and Dan Plesac retired the final 13 Oakland batters. Dave Stewart was excellent and made just one bad pitch, which resulted in a solo homer by B.J. Surhoff in the sixth inning for the game’s only run.

September 3: The A’s got off to a good start, as Carney Lansford had an RBI single and Jose Canseco followed with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Tony Phillips’ sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the fourth inning. The Brewers cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth, but that was it. Three of Milwaukee’s four hits came in that inning.
