All-Time Tennis: Atlanta

It almost seems hard to believe, but in the 29th tournament of the season, a pair of first-time winners were crowned. Arthur Ashe and Tracy Austin, both playing in their first final, beat the odds to win in Atlanta. Ashe knocked off top-seeded Pete Sampras in the semifinals before defeating Ken Rosewall in the final, both coming in three sets. Austin has had a remarkable last two tournaments. She beat top-seeded Steffi Graf in the quarterfinals in the last event, and defeated Graf again here in the final (as well as knocking out Martina Navratilova in the quarterfinals).
