Jimmy Connors became the first six-time winner on tour, while Chris Evert collected her second title in Miami. In a stacked field, Connors had to beat Stan Smith and Novak Djokovic in three sets to reach the final. Goran Ivanisevic upset Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl to meet him there, but Connors prevailed in straight sets. Evert had an easier path with upsets on the women’s side, and she won all three of her matches in straight sets. She trailed Gabriela Sabatini 5-4 in both sets but came back to win.
