9/4-6/1989 Boston at Oakland

The A’s need some sweeps, but for the sixth time in the last seven series, they won two out of three. Facing Boston, they once again matched the real-life results. Dave Parker and Mark McGwire both hit their 20th home runs of the season (and McGwire hit two more in a come-from-behind win in the finale). After 140 games, Oakland remains three wins behind pace.

September 4: Mark McGwire, Dave Parker and Jose Canseco all homered to make things easy for Mike Moore. McGwire and Parker hit two-run blasts in the second and third innings, respectively, and Canseco had a solo shot in the sixth. Parker drove in four runs, as he also had a two-RBI double in the fourth. Moore tossed eight shutout innings for his 15th win and Boston only averted a shutout with a run in the ninth inning against the bullpen.

September 6: It didn’t look good when Oakland fell behind 3-0 after 3 1/2 innings and didn’t yet have a hit. But Mark McGwire came to the rescue, as he hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the contest. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, McGwire singled home Carney Lansford for the go-ahead run. Three perfect innings in relief gave Rick Honeycutt his ninth win and Dennis Eckersley his 26th save.
