Oakland took two of three at Boston, a huge result considering the real-life A’s were swept. It could have been a much-needed sweep for Oakland but for an extra-innings defeat in the finale. After 148 games, the A’s are now just one win behind pace. But, Oakland will have to go 12-2 in the final 14 games to get to 99 wins.

September 15: After being mostly shut down by Roger Clemens the last two times out, Mike Moore did what he needed to prevent the Red Sox ace from getting another win over the A’s. Moore tossed eight shutout innings and gave up only three hits. Oakland got back-to-back doubles from Dave Henderson and Mark McGwire for the first run in the fifth inning, and Dave Parker added an RBI double in the ninth.

September 16: After the Red Sox took a 1-0 lead, the A’s exploded for all six of their runs in the fifth inning. After three walks loaded the bases, Rickey Henderson had a two-run single, Carney Lansford had an RBI single and Dave Parker slammed a three-run homer. Boston closed the gap to 6-4 in the ninth but Dennis Eckersley came in and got his second straight save.
