The final men’s tournament of season was a classic, as the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open. #4 Novak Djokovic prevailed after beating the #1 and #2 seeds in five sets. He became the fourth different winner of a Grand Slam event this season.
- 1st Round: Most of the favorites advanced, but #6 Roger Federer had to withdraw to illness after winning the first set. #7 John McEnroe and #12 Boris Becker were the other two notables to lose, both going down in five sets.
- Round of 16: Six of the top eight made it on to the quarterfinals, and the top half of the bracket went chalk. But the bottom half featured two Cinderellas in #26 Stan Smith and #27 Juan Martin Del Potro.
- Quarterfinals: Most of the other Grand Slams were full of upsets at this point, but not here at the U.S. Open, as each of the top four seeds made it through to the semifinals.
- Semifinals: #4 Novak Djokovic derailed #1 Ivan Lendl’s hopes for a second Grand Slam title, winning in five sets. #2 Rafael Nadal made short work of #3 Jimmy Connors.
- Final: Djokovic also prevented Nadal from winning his second Grand Slam. Tied 1-1, Nadal was serving with a 5-4 lead in the third set, but Djokovic broke serve and went on to win the third set. Nadal evened it up in the fourth set, but Djokovic brought home the crown with a 6-4 fifth-set victory.
