The women’s tournament had a similar ending to the men’s event, as the winner ended up beating the #1 seed in the semifinals and the #2 seed in the final. Here, #5 Martina Navratilova captured the title after beating #1 Martina Hingis and #2 Steffi Graf in succession. Also like the men, she became the fourth different winner of a Grand Slam this season.
- 1st Round: The better-seeded player won only 10 of 16 matches, and there were some notable departures, including #3 Kim Clijsters, #4 Serena Williams and #8 Chris Evert.
- Round of 16: Five of the top eight players made it through to the quarterfinals. #30 Victoria Azarenka was the lowest-seeded player left after a pair of upsets. #25 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario knocked off a pair of top-10 players in her first two matches.
- Quarterfinals: Three heavyweights advanced to the final four, and they’re joined by a shocker in #30 Azarenka, who sent both the #3 and #6 players packing over the first the rounds. Billie Jean King served for the set at 5-4 both in the first and third sets, but Azarenka broke serve and won both in tiebreakers.
- Semifinals: The #1 seed, Martina Hingis, was ousted by #5 Martina Navratilova. Hingis was the only player left in the running looking for a second Grand Slam win. Azarenka’s run finally came to an end at the hands of #2 Steffi Graf.
- Final: All three sets between Navratilova and Graf went past six games. All three were decided by 7-5 scores, with Navratilova winning the first and third.
