A disaster in Cleveland, as the A’s suffered two walk-off losses and only won one of the three games. The real-life Oakland team swept this series. That erases all of the Athletics’ margin for error, as they must now go 11-0 the rest of the way to match their 99 wins. Worse yet, with the revised results, the A’s are 5.5 games back of the Angels with 11 to play (instead of being 2.5 up). Dave Parker had three home runs and Jose Canseco had two in this series. After 151 games, the A’s are three wins behind pace.

September 18: Joe Carter homered in the bottom of the first, and it stayed 1-0 in the Indians’ favor for a while. Jose Canseco finally tied it with a solo homer of his own in the seventh. But in the bottom of the ninth, Jerry Browne walked, was sacrificed to second, and scored on Carter’s walk-off single. Other than the homer, the A’s couldn’t solve Tom Candiotti, collecting only five hits. Dave Stewart also gave up five hits in the loss.

September 20: Things looked bleak when Joe Carter and Albert Belle hit solo homers in the first inning and the A’s couldn’t get on the board in the first six innings. But Dave Parker homered in the seventh, Jose Canseco had a game-tying RBI double in the eighth, and Oakland went up 3-2 in the ninth on Tony Phillips’ two-out RBI single. Dennis Eckersley couldn’t close it out, however, as a walk and a hit put Indians on second and third with no one out. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Eckersley got the first out. But with the infield in, Dave Clark’s single found a hole and scored two for another walk-off victory.
