9/25-28/1989 Texas at Oakland

The A’s got a much-needed four-game sweep against the Rangers in the penultimate series of the 1989 season. Although they can’t reach the 99-win mark, they still have a chance to win the American League West, as they’re now just one game behind California with three to play. All four wins over the Rangers were by one or two runs.

September 27: Mike Moore didn’t have his best stuff, but it was enough to win his 20th game. The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead, but Dave Henderson’s two-run single put the A’s ahead in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two out in the sixth, Rickey Henderson’s double scored three to make it 5-1. Texas put across single runs in the seventh and eighth, but Oakland’s bullpen got the final four outs.
