As it worked out in real life, group leaders Argentina and Chile met in the final contest, and Argentina advanced after winning. In my replay, the same matchup would determine the group winner. Coincidentally, both teams beat France 3-0 and both countries beat Mexico 5-1. That put them level on goal differential and goals scored heading into the meeting.
Argentina struck first, scoring in the second half. It looked like it would end up 1-0, but Chile pulled off a stunning equalizer two minutes into stoppage time. A draw wouldn’t easily decide the group (and tiebreaker rules from 1930 couldn’t be found online), so I made the decision to play 30 minutes of overtime. Chile went ahead 2-1, but Argentina tied it up late. Again, a decision had to be made on how to decide the group, so the match went to penalty kicks. Argentina missed its first attempt, but made the next four to win the shootout 4-3.
