The four group winners in the replay were the same as real life, giving us the exact same semifinal matchups as 1930: Argentina vs. United States, and Uruguay vs. Yugoslavia. Argentina did its part to match reality, routing the USA. But the host nation, real-life winner Uruguay, didn’t come through to create the same final, as Yugoslavia flipped a real-life 6-1 loss into a 4-2 victory.
The final was a classic that needed extra time after it was tied at three at the end of regulation. Argentina took leads of 1-0 and 3-1, but Yugoslavia tied it up twice, including an equalizer in the 86th minute. But in the overtime, Argentina dominated and scored three times to claim the first-ever World Cup.
Guillermo Stabile had a hat trick in the final, scoring Argentina’s three goals in regulation. He earned the Golden Boot with seven goals in five games (he had a tournament-best eight in four games in 1930).
