Three consecutive extra-base hits in the top of the third helped score three runs and put Pittsburgh up 4-0. Fred Clarke hit a one-out double, followed by a triple by Ginger Beaumont and a double by Honus Wagner. Deacon Phillippe scattered four hits and didn’t give up an earned run in the victory.

The Red Sox led 5-2 after Tris Speaker’s two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. The Pirates came back to score two in the seventh and two in the eighth to go up 6-5. Boston responded with a five-run eighth inning, which included a two-run single by Larry Gardner and a solo homer from Jake Stahl.

Sam Leever shut down the Red Sox in a six-hit shutout. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, and left runners stranded on first and third in the sixth. Ginger Beaumont’s RBI single started the scoring in the third. Leever helped himself with an RBI double in the fourth. The Pirates then got RBI singles from Kitty Bransfield in the fifth and seventh innings.
