GTOP S1W1: 1915 Phillies vs. 1906 Cubs

On paper, I thought the 1906 Cubs were going to be one of the strongest teams, and the 1915 Phillies would be one of the weakest. But despite being outhit in three of the four games, Philadelphia managed to sweep Chicago. Three of the games were decided by one run (the other by two), and the Phillies won two of them on Gavvy Cravath walk-off hits in extra innings. The leading hitters were Fred Luderus (5-for-11, .455) for the Phillies and Jimmy Slagle (7-for-17, .412) for the Cubs.

Game #1: Philadelphia 5, Chicago 4

Tied 2-2 in the seventh, the first two Phillies walked. After a sacrifice, Bobby Byrne had a two-run single, and Dave Bancroft followed with an RBI single. The Cubs ran off four straight hits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the tying run was finally stranded on third base.

Game #2: Philadelphia 4, Chicago 2

The Phillies jumped out to a 4-0 lead, which included a three-run double by Bert Niehoff in the third inning. Again, Chicago threatened with a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on first and third before the final out was made.

Game #3: Philadelphia 4, Chicago 3 (12 inn.)

The Phillies managed only four hits off of Mordecai Brown, but made each of them count. Gavvy Cravath and Fred Luderus hit solo home runs in the second and fifth innings, respectively. Beals Becker led off the seventh with a double and scored on a Luderus sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3. And then, in the bottom of the 12th, Dave Bancroft walked with one out and was sacrificed to second. Cravath ended the game with a run-scoring single.

Game #4: Philadelphia 4, Chicago 3 (10 inn.)

Grover Cleveland Alexander was on his way to a shutout entering the ninth inning, but the Cubs scored three times to take a 3-2 lead. Harry Steinfeldt drove in two with a double and Johnny Kling had a two-out RBI single. But, Philadelphia bounced back and tied it on Bill Killefer’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. In the 10th, Dave Bancroft singled and scored the game-winning run on Gavvy Cravath’s second straight walk-off hit.
