The 1912 New York Giants continued their strong start to the season, sweeping the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates. The pitching was excellent, as the most runs that were scored by one team was four, and Christy Mathewson tossed a shutout. Fred Merkle went 5-for-14 (.357) with four extra-base hits to lead the Giants (7-1). Ginger Beaumont batted 7-for-15 (.467) in a losing cause for the Pirates (2-6).
Game #1: New York 4, Pittsburgh 3 (10 inn.)
The Pirates’ Deacon Phillippe was cruising along with a no-hitter through six innings (as well as a 3-0 lead), but things fell apart in the seventh. Fred Merkle hit a two-run homer and Jack Meyers drove in a run with a double to tie the game. In the top of the 10th, pinch-hitter Tillie Shaffer led off with a single. The Giants loaded the bases with no one out and Beals Becker ended it with a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Pittsburgh got out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Claude Ritchey’s RBI triple and a run-scoring double play. But the Giants rallied from multiple runs down for the second time in the series.
