GTOP S1W2: 1914 Braves vs. 1909 Tigers

The 1914 Boston Braves took three of four games from the 1909 Detroit Tigers, including an improbable extra-innings victory in game three. The Tigers went up 7-4 in the top of the 10th, only for the Braves to score four runs to earn the walk-off victory in the bottom half of the inning. Charlie Deal went 6-for-14 (.429) for the Braves (4-4), while Ty Cobb hit .529 (9-for-17) with five doubles for the Tigers (3-5).

Game #1: Boston 8, Detroit 6

The teams traded two-run leads — 2-0 Boston, 4-2 Detroit, 6-4 Boston — and then Detroit tied it at six in the bottom of the eighth on Boss Schmidt’s two-run single. But in the top of the ninth, Johnny Evers and Rabbit Maranville provided RBI singles to put the Braves back on top.

Game #2: Detroit 5, Boston 1

After Boston scored first, Detroit scored the next five runs for an easy win. Winning pitcher George Mullin gave up just four hits and also drove in two runs.

Detroit tied the game at four in the top of the ninth on Davy Jones’ two-out single. Game #4: Boston 6, Detroit 2

Hank Gowdy got the Braves going with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Charles Schmidt and Charlie Deal made it 4-0 with RBI singles in the fifth. It was 6-0 when Detroit finally broke up the shutout in the eighth inning on Jim Delahanty’s two-RBI double. Bill James gave up five hits and no earned runs in the win.
