GTOP S1W2: 1915 Phillies vs. 1911 Athletics

The 1911 Athletics won the battle of Philadelphia, taking three of four games from the 1915 Phillies. This was the first series of the season for the Athletics (3-1), while the Phillies (5-3) faltered after their opening-round sweep. Eddie Collins batted .533 (8-for-15) for the Athletics, while the Phillies were led by Dave Bancroft and his .429 (6-for-14) average. The Athletics’ Home Run Baker became the first player to hit two home runs in one series.

Game #1: Athletics 9, Phillies 3

The Athletics broke out to an early lead for the easy win. Eddie Collins had a two-run single in the bottom of the first. Stuffy McInnis had sacrifice flies in both the first and third inning. Home Run Baker lived up to his name with a two-run shot in the fifth inning, while Rube Oldring did the same in the eighth.

Game #2: Phillies 5, Athletics 3

Dave Bancroft’s two-run homer gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead in the third inning. They expanded the lead to 5-1 in the eighth on RBI singles by Fred Luderus and Bill Killefer. The Athletics got two back in the bottom of the eighth on another two-run homer by Home Run Baker. The Athletics put two runners on in the ninth and had the winning run at the plate with one out, but couldn’t push any runs across.

Game #3: Athletics 4, Phillies 1

Eddie Collins’ two-run double in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie and put the Athletics ahead for good. They picked up their fourth run in the fifth inning when Bris Lord led off with a single and later scored on an error. Eddie Plank gave up just five hits and at one point retired 16 straight batters.

Game #4: Athletics 4, Phillies 1

The Athletics got their runs on a two-run single by Stuffy McInnis in the fourth and a two-run double by Danny Murphy in the sixth. Chief Bender outdueled Grover Cleveland Alexander and was on the verge of a shutout but the Phillies picked up an unearned run in the ninth inning on Bill Killefer’s RBI single.
