The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates began their third series in the cellar, but may have gotten out of it after winning three of four against the 1906 Chicago Cubs. Both teams are now 5-7 after three weeks. The down-up-down Cubs were swept the first week, earned a sweep the second week, and were nearly swept here except for an extra-innings win in the finale. Honus Wagner hit .375 (6-for-16) to lead the Pirates, while Frank Chance was the only Cubs hitter over .300 at .312 (5-for-16).

Honus Wagner knocked a solo homer in the first and Tommy Leach hit a two-run homer in a four-run third inning, helping propel the Pirates to a 5-0 lead. Kitty Bransfield made it 6-0 with an RBI double in the seventh, and Claude Ritchey drove in two with a double in the ninth to make it 8-0. Chicago finally broke up Deacon Phillippe’s shutout bid in the ninth inning.
