After a strong first two weeks that put them atop the standings, the 1912 New York Giants couldn’t keep it going in week three and lost three of four games to the 1909 Detroit Tigers. Detroit (6-6) posted come-from-behind wins twice, and Ed Summers pitched a shutout in the finale. Tom Jones batted .500 (7-for-14) and was one of three Tigers to hit .400 or better. Jack Meyers was the only starter on the Giants (8-4) to hit .300 or better, as he went 5-for-15 (.333).
Game #1: Detroit 5, New York 4
George Moriarty’s two-run homer gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the fourth. The Giants tied the game at three in the sixth on Red Murray’s two-run single, and went ahead 4-3 in the seventh on Red Ames’ RBI double. But in the bottom of the eighth, Ty Cobb singled and stole second, then scored on Sam Crawford’s single to tie the game. Crawford later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Christy Mathewson improved to 3-0 and gave up two earned runs in nine innings. The Giants scored four times in the top of the first, including a two-run homer from Beals Becker and RBI hits from Fred Merkle and Buck Herzog. A two-run triple from Fred Snodgrass in the fifth pushed the lead to 7-2.

The Giants broke out to a 4-0 lead after Larry Doyle’s two-RBI double in the second inning. It didn’t last, as the Tigers put five runs across in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Ed Willett scored two with a base hit, and Sam Crawford had a bases-loaded triple. Crawford then hit a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth, and drove in his fifth run with a single in the ninth.

The Tigers battered Rube Marquard for all eight runs in the first four innings. Ty Cobb had a pair of run-scoring doubles among his three RBI and Donie Bush drove in two with a triple in the fourth inning. Ed Summers scattered four hits and only allowed one Giant to reach third base in the shutout.
