GTOP S1W3: 1911 Athletics vs. 1912 Red Sox

The road team managed to win all four games here, as the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics took the first two but the 1912 Boston Red Sox bounced back to win the final two games. After a blowout in the opener, the last three low-scoring contests were all decided by one or two runs. Eddie Collins batted .400 (6-for-15) for Philadelphia (5-3). Boston (4-8) didn’t have anyone hit .300 or with more than four hits in the series.

Game #1: Philadelphia 10, Boston 3

The Athletics’ 10 runs were more than both teams would put up combined in the final three games. Danny Murphy and Rube Oldring both had two-run singles to make it 4-0 Philadelphia in the second inning, though the Red Sox’s Heinie Wagner came back with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second. Philadelphia put the game away with a four-run fifth inning, which included a three-RBI double from Bris Lord.

Boston got on the scoreboard in the first inning on Tris Speaker’s sacrifice fly, and took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Duffy Lewis singled and later scored on a passed ball.
