GTOP S1W4: 1909 Tigers vs. 1902 Pirates

The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates won the opener, but the 1909 Detroit Tigers stormed back to take the next three games and claim the series. There were no shutouts, but no slugfests either. Each of the three Tiger wins were decided by one or two runs. Ty Cobb continued his torrid pace, going 8-for-16 (.500). He’s batting .460 halfway through the season for Detroit (9-7). None of the Pirate (6-10) regulars hit over .300 in this series.

Game #1: Pittsburgh 4, Detroit 1

Deacon Phillippe struck out 11 and gave up just one run in the Pirates’ only win of the series. Kitty Bransfield had an RBI single in the first and a two-run triple in the third to make it 3-0. Detroit’s only run came on a Sam Crawford RBI single in the fourth, but Pittsburgh rebuilt a three-run lead on Honus Wagner’s RBI single in the fifth.
