GTOP S1W4: 1912 Red Sox vs. 1917 White Sox

The 1917 White Sox entered the series with the best winning percentage in the league, while the 1912 Boston Red Sox had the worst. But, the series was split with two victories apiece. The finale saw a fantastic 1-0 pitchers’ duel decided on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth, with Boston’s Smoky Joe Wood getting the shutout win. Jake Stahl batted .500 (7-for-14) for Boston (6-10), while Chick Gandil hit .467 (7-for-15) for Chicago (8-4).

Game #1: Chicago 4, Boston 2

The White Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Eddie Collins’ RBI single and Happy Felsch’s sacrifice fly. Boston tied it in the top of the third on RBI singles from Tris Speaker and Larry Gardner. But the White Sox went back in front with two more in the bottom of the third, with Chick Gandil and Swede Risberg both providing two-out, run-scoring singles. Both Eddie Cicotte and Hugh Bedient were excellent the rest of the way, with Cicotte collecting his third win in three starts.

Game #2: Boston 5, Chicago 3

Both the Red Sox and the White Sox put up two runs in the first inning. The Red Sox then went ahead 3-2 in the fourth on Ray Collins’ sacrifice fly, and put two more runs on the board in the fifth as Tris Speaker and Jake Stahl both provided their second RBI doubles of the game. Chicago got one back in the seventh on Shano Collins’ pinch-hit single. The White Sox threatened in the ninth but had a runner thrown out trying to go from first to third on a single.

Game #3: Chicago 5, Boston 1

Red Faber had an excellent performance on the mound for the White Sox, throwing eight shutout innings before the Red Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning. Swede Risberg drove in the game’s opening run in the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice. Chick Gandil made it 2-0 in the seventh with an RBI single. The White Sox broke the game open in the top of the ninth as Risberg drove in another run with a hit and Ray Schalk followed with a two-run homer.

Boston’s Smoky Joe Wood and Chicago’s Lefty Williams had a marvelous pitching duel, with each putting zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth. Tris Speaker led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Larry Gardner’s double scored Speaker for the walk-off victory. Wood gave up six hits in the shutout and twice stranded runners on third base.
