In another series with close, low-scoring results, the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies and 1914 Boston Braves split their four games. The first two contests were both decided by one run with some late-inning heroics, and the final two games both had 3-1 final scores. Charles Schmidt hit .462 (6-for-13) for the Braves (6-6), and Lefty Tyler threw a one-hit shutout in the opening contest. Fred Luderus batted 5-for-15 (.333) to lead the Phillies (7-9).
Game #1: Boston 1, Philadelphia 0
Boston’s Lefty Tyler retired the first 23 batters of the game before Philadelphia’s George Whitted doubled with two out in the eighth. Tyler would also give up a ninth-inning walk in a one-hit shutout. The Phillies’ Al Demaree was almost equally impressive, throwing eight shutout innings. But in the bottom of the ninth, Joe Connolly led off with a single, and was then sacrificed to second base. He stole third base, and the catcher’s throw went into left field, allowing him to score the walk-off winning run via the error.

Game #2: Philadelphia 4, Boston 3 (11 inn.)
The Phillies looked to have the game in hand as they held a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth. Earlier, Fred Luderus opened the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth, and in the seventh, Bert Niehoff had a sacrifice fly and Bill Killefer had an RBI single. But, Boston rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Les Mann had a two-run triple, followed by a Hank Gowdy RBI single. In the top of the 11th, Niehoff drove in another run with a two-out single. The Braves got the potential tying run to third base in the bottom of the 11th before the final out was made.

Game #4: Philadelphia 3, Boston 1
Boston got a first-inning run again as Herbie Moran singled and later scored on a balk. But that would be all the Braves would get against Grover Cleveland Alexander, as he gave up only three more hits and allowed only one to make it into scoring position. The Phillies tied it in the second on Bert Niehoff’s RBI single, went ahead in the third as Dave Bancroft scored on a wild pitch, and got an insurance run on Bill Killefer’s RBI single in the eighth.
