GTOP S1W5: 1911 Athletics vs. 1902 Pirates

Week five commenced with a four-game split between the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics and the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates. The Athletics (9-7) remained two games above .500 while the Pirates (8-12) stayed four under. Home Run Baker and Danny Murphy both hit .333 (5-for-15) for the Athletics. No one from Pittsburgh had more than four hits in the series, with Tommy Leach batting a team-best .333 (4-for-12).

Game #1: Philadelphia 4, Pittsburgh 2

The Athletics jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after back-to-back RBI singles from Home Run Baker and Danny Murphy in the third inning. Pittsburgh closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, though Philadelphia added a fourth run in the fifth inning on another Murphy RBI single. Jack Coombs repeatedly pitched out of trouble in the win, as the Pirates put runners into scoring position in five of the final six innings.

Game #2: Pittsburgh 2, Philadelphia 1

The Athletics got on the board quickly, as Bris Lord led off the game with a double, stole third and scored on Rube Oldring’s sacrifice fly. They wouldn’t score again, however, and only put a runner into scoring position one more time off of the Pirates’ Jesse Tannehill. Pittsburgh tied in the sixth inning when Ginger Beaumont tripled and scored on Kitty Bransfield’s RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases with no one out and Harry Smith delivered a game-ending RBI single.

Game #4: Philadelphia 4, Pittsburgh 3

Philadelphia scored first for the fourth straight game, plating three runs in the fourth inning behind Jack Barry’s RBI triple and Ira Thomas’ RBI single. Pittsburgh’s first hit off of Chief Bender came in the fifth inning when Kitty Bransfield doubled, and he scored on Tommy Leach’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Home Run Baker gave the Athletics a 4-1 lead with a run-scoring single in the seventh. Pittsburgh added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make it a one-run game, but that’s how it ended.
