The 1912 New York Giants took back sole possession of first place in the standings after a four-game sweep of the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants’ Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard both tossed shutouts. The New York pitchers only allowed five runs in all, and had a 25-inning scoreless streak at one point. New York (12-4) was led by Larry Doyle’s .429 (6-for-14) average. After opening the season with a four-game sweep of the 1906 Cubs, the Phillies have gone 3-13 since. George Whitted hit .357 (5-for-14) for Philadelphia (7-13).
Game #1: New York 3, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Gerry Cravath and George Whitted, but that would be it. New York scored single runs in the first and second innings to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Art Fletcher walked, went to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a sacrifice. Fred Snodgrass came through with a base hit for what turned out to be the winning run.

Game #3: New York 11, Philadelphia 3
The Giants had an incredible display of power for the deadball era, hitting three home runs. Larry Doyle and Beals Becker hit back-to-back shots in the first inning, and Buck Herzog provided a grand slam in the third inning. Herzog also had a two-run single in the fourth inning, as did Jack Meyers, making it 11-0 after four. Philadelphia averted the shutout and scored for the first time in 26 innings with three runs in the ninth.

Game #4: New York 1, Philadelphia 0
Rube Marquard won a classic pitchers’ duel to finish the sweep. He pitched a four-hit shutout and again, only one Philadelphia baserunner made it to second base. Grover Cleveland Alexander was a hard-luck loser for the Phillies, giving up just the one run in his eight innings. The Giants’ Beals Becker led off the fourth inning with a walk. After stealing second, two outs were made, but Buck Herzog provided the base hit that scored Becker.
