GTOP S1W5: 1912 Red Sox vs. 1914 Braves

Another intracity battle resulted in a split, as the series between the 1912 Boston Red Sox and the 1914 Boston Braves saw the visiting team win all four games. Three of the four contests were decided by one run. Joe Connolly hit .400 (6-for-15) for the Braves (8-8). Tris Speaker batted .375 (6-for-15) for the Red Sox (8-12). The Braves’ Dick Rudolph tossed a shutout in game #3.

Game #1: Red Sox 4, Braves 3 (12 inn.)

The Red Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Larry Gardner had a sacrifice fly and Jake Stahl followed with a two-run double. It stayed that way until the eighth, when the Braves scored three times to tie the game, featuring RBI singles by Joe Connolly and Rabbit Maranville, and a sacrifice fly by Charlie Deal. The game went to extra innings, and finally, in the top of the 12th, the Red Sox’s Clyde Engle had a pinch-hit, two-out single. After a stolen base and a walk, he scored on Steve Yerkes’ hit. The Braves went quietly in the bottom of the 12th.

Game #3: Braves 1, Red Sox 0

A terrific pitcher’s duel saw the Braves’ Dick Rudolph beat the Red Sox’s Buck O’Brien. Rudolph tossed a three-hit shutout and walked only one. O’Brien gave up three hits in his eight innings of work. The only run came in the third inning as Johnny Evers drew a one-out walk, and Joe Connolly followed with a triple. The Red Sox only got baserunners as far as second base.

Game #4: Braves 2, Red Sox 1

The Braves again won a low-scoring game. They scored twice in the third inning as Les Mann and Hank Gowdy led off with back-to-back doubles. Winning pitcher Bill James then drove in a run with a single. The Red Sox finally got a run in the bottom of the eighth on Bill Carrigan’s RBI single. But, Carrigan was later thrown out at home trying to score the tying run. James also pitched out of trouble in the ninth, as the Red Sox had the potential tying run on second with one out.
