GTOP S1W6: 1917 White Sox vs. 1911 Athletics

The 1917 Chicago White Sox and the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics entered the week in second and third place, respectively. Neither took advantage of the matchup, with each side winning twice. The winning team scored four runs in three of the four contests, and the other was a 1-0 shutout by Chicago’s Red Faber. Shoeless Joe Jackson continued his torrid pace for the White Sox (12-8), batting .467 (7-for-15) to raise his season average to .413. Danny Murphy hit .375 (6-for-16) for Philadelphia (11-9), while Eddie Collins became the first player in the league to hit two home runs in one game in the finale.

Game #1: Chicago 4, Philadelphia 2

The Athletics broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth on Home Run Baker’s RBI single, but the White Sox came back with the next four runs. Buck Weaver tied it with an run-scoring single in the seventh, and then Chicago put together a three-run eighth inning thanks to an RBI single by Happy Felsch, an RBI double by Swede Risberg and an RBI single by Ray Schalk. The Athletics’ Eddie Collins got one back with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth, but Philadelphia would get no closer. Eddie Cicotte improved to 4-1 on the season.

It was tied 2-2 after five when the Athletics went ahead for good. In the bottom of the sixth, Danny Murphy collected his second double of the game with one out. He scored on Rube Goldring’s single, and then Stuffy McInnis followed with an RBI double.

Chicago’s Red Faber and Philadelphia’s Eddie Plank had a terrific pitchers’ duel, with the White Sox coming out on top. Faber tossed a four-hitter while striking out nine. Plank only gave up three hits with eight strikeouts, but gave up the lone run of the game in the second inning. With two outs, Happy Felsch walked, and he scored from first base on Swede Risberg’s double. Philadelphia put runners into scoring position four times but got no one past second base.

Game #4: Philadelphia 4, Chicago 1

Eddie Collins was responsible for all five runs. The Athletics’ Collins blasted two home runs, a three-run shot in the fifth inning and a solo tater in the eighth inning. The White Sox’s Collins drove in his team’s only run in the sixth inning with a two-out double.
