Boston’s rout featured a six-run second inning. Among the six in that frame were a two-run single by Harry Hooper and a two-RBI double by Tris Speaker. Hugh Bedient gave up just one run and picked up his first victory in six starts.

Christy Mathewson didn’t have his best stuff, but improved to 5-0 in five starts. The Giants scored early and often, highlighted by a four-run second inning, with Art Fletcher providing a two-run single. Larry Doyle hit a solo homer in the fifth. Fletcher also drove in runs with a triple in the sixth and a single in the eighth.

Larry Doyle fell short of hitting for the cycle but had a triple in the third inning, a three-run homer in the fifth, and an RBI double in the seventh. His homer made it 4-0 in the fifth inning. The Giants led 5-0 and 6-3 but the Red Sox closed within one run in the eighth on Duffy Lewis’ RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, Boston put runners on first and second before the final out was recorded.

Larry Doyle’s third home run in three games started the scoring in the first inning. Boston went up 3-1 in the second as Harry Hooper had a two-RBI triple. The Giants went back in front 4-3 after scoring three runs of their own in the third inning, with Fred Merkle knocking a two-run single. That was it for the Giants, however, and they left runners stranded on third base in the seventh and eighth innings. Boston went ahead in the sixth as Clyde Engle had an RBI triple and scored on Smoky Joe Wood’s sacrifice fly.
