The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates led in all four games, but the 1917 Chicago White Sox rallied to win three of them. And the Pirates’ win in the finale required a comeback of their own that took extra innings. Nemo Leibold hit .357 (5-for-14) to lead the White Sox (15-9). Fred Clarke batted .412 (7-for-17) for the Pirates (9-15).
Game #1: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 4
The White Sox took an early 2-0 lead, but Pittsburgh went in front 3-2 in the fifth inning on Honus Wagner’s RBI single. Chicago put up three runs in the top of the ninth, as Swede Risberg had an RBI single and winning pitcher Eddie Cicotte drove in the next two with a hit. Pittsburgh got a two-out RBI double from Harry Smith in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one-run game, but couldn’t bring him home. Cicotte improved to 5-1 in six starts.

Game two followed a similar script. The White Sox scored first, the Pirates went ahead, and Chicago then owned the late innings. An RBI single by Buck Weaver followed by a run-scoring error put the White Sox ahead 3-2 in the seventh inning. They added another run in the ninth on Nemo Leibold’s RBI double.

Game #3: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 3
The Pirates scored first in this one, but Chicago countered with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to make it 5-1. Shoeless Joe Jackson had a two-run double in the fifth, and Ray Schalk, Red Faber and Nemo Leibold had RBI hits in the sixth. Pittsburgh scored two on Fred Clarke’s double in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit in half, but that was it.

Game #4: Pittsburgh 3, Chicago 2 (10 inn.)
The Pirates again scored first, only to have the White Sox go in front late, as Swede Risberg put Chicago ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single. But Pittsburgh got one in the top of the ninth as Tommy Leach led off with a single and scored on Harry Smith’s sacrifice fly, and got another one in the top of the 10th as Fred Clarke led off with a single and later scored on Leach’s two-out base hit. Jack Chesbro earned his first win of the season.
