GTOP S1W7: 1909 Tigers vs. 1912 Red Sox

The 1909 Detroit Tigers’ hopes for a championship suffered a big blow as they lost three of four games to the 1912 Boston Red Sox. Detroit (13-11) began the week tied for second but now won’t be any better than fourth. Bill Carrigan batted .429 (6-for-14) with six RBI to lead the Red Sox (13-15), while Buck O’Brien tossed a shutout to win game three. The Tigers were led by Ty Cobb’s .333 average (5-for-15), though that dropped his season average to .432.

Game #1: Boston 4, Detroit 1

The Tigers suffered a blow in the second inning when starting pitcher Ed Killian was ejected during his plate appearance. The Tigers had a 1-0 lead at the time thanks to Tom Jones’ double and Donie Bush’s run-scoring single. Wild Bill Donovan pitched well in long relief for a while, but Boston scored twice in the sixth on Duffy Lewis’ two-run double, and then added two more on an error in the seventh inning.

The Red Sox struck for four runs in the third inning, and that would be all they would need. Harry Hooper had an RBI triple, Larry Gardner had an RBI single and Bill Carrigan had a two-run single. The Tigers scored once in the eighth on Sam Crawford’s RBI single and once in the ninth on Jim Delahanty’s RBI single, but could only cut the Red Sox lead in half by the end.

Game #4: Detroit 2, Boston 1

Detroit’s Ed Summers outdueled Smoky Joe Wood as the Tigers avoided the series sweep. Detroit scored first in the fourth inning on Jim Delahanty’s two-out RBI single. Boston tied it in the sixth as Tris Speaker doubled and scored on Jake Stahl’s single. The Tigers broke the deadlock in the eighth as George Moriarty led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Tom Jones’ sacrifice fly. The Red Sox loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth but Summers got the final two outs.
