GTOP S1W7: 1912 Giants vs. 1906 Cubs

The 1912 New York Giants entered week seven with a two-game lead, though the 1917 Chicago White Sox and 1911 Philadelphia Athletics were breathing down their neck after good showings. The Giants responded with a four-game sweep of the 1906 Chicago Cubs to increase their advantage to three games with eight to play. After a shutout by Red Ames, the final three victories all came by one run, the last two with walk-off hits. None of the Giants (18-6) had more than four hits in the four games. Harry Steinfeldt batted .412 (7-for-17) for the Cubs (12-16).

Game #1: New York 4, Chicago 0

Red Ames tossed a four-hit shutout, and only allowed two Cub baserunners to reach second base. The Giants got an RBI single from Fred Merkle in the second inning and an RBI double from Beals Becker in the fourth inning, and then Larry Doyle put the game away in the top of the ninth with a two-run homer, his league-leading sixth of the season.

Game #2: New York 4, Chicago 3

The Giants scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Jack Meyers and a sacrifice fly by Buck Herzog, and twice more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Beals Becker and an RBI double by Fred Merkle to make it 4-0. That would have seemed to be enough for Christy Mathewson, who retired the first 12 batters he faced and didn’t give up a hit until the seventh inning. But in the top of the ninth, the Cubs scored three times on four hits. Johnny Kling’s two-run double made it 4-3 with one out. Mathewson recovered to get the final two outs and improve to 6-0 in six starts.

Game #3: New York 5, Chicago 4 (11 inn.)

The Cubs built leads of 2-0 and 4-1 and outhit New York 11-6. But the Giants made it 4-3 on Jack Meyers’ two-run double in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Buck Herzog led off with a triple and scored on Fred Merkle’s sacrifice fly. The Cubs put runners into scoring position in both the 10th and 11th but couldn’t capitalize. In the bottom of the 11th, after a couple of walks, pinch-hitter Tillie Shafer came through with a two-out, walk-off RBI single.

Game #4: New York 2, Chicago 1

The Cubs again took the early lead, as Frank Chance walked in the first inning and eventually scored on Johnny Kling’s sacrifice fly. Chicago wouldn’t score again off of Rube Marquard, who struck out 14 Cubs. Light-hitting shortstop Art Fletcher was the hero for the Giants. He collected their first hit off of Jack Pfiester in the fifth inning with a game-tying solo home run. In the bottom of the ninth, a hit-by-pitch, a walk and the Cubs’ fourth error loaded the bases with one out. Fletcher ended the game with an RBI single.
