In a battle between the two cellar-dwellers, the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates came out on top and took three of four against the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirates (12-16) were on the verge of a sweep with a 4-0 lead in the finale before the Phillies (9-19) rallied. Harry Smith batted .438 (7-for-16) for Pittsburgh, while Gavvy Cravath hit .429 (6-for-14) for the Phillies. Beals Becker homered twice for Philadelphia.
Game #1: Pittsburgh 5, Philadelphia 1
The Pirates broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fifth inning. Tommy Leach drove in a run with a single and Claude Ritchey followed with a sacrifice fly. Ritchey then plated the final two runs in the ninth inning with a two-RBI triple. Deacon Phillippe struck out 11 in a complete-game win.

Game #2: Pittsburgh 3, Philadelphia 2
The Pirates put up three runs before the home fans could even settled in, as the first three batters — Fred Clarke, Ginger Beaumont and Honus Wagner — all singled, and Kitty Bransfield and Tommy Leach followed with sacrifice flies. That would be it for Pittsburgh, but it would be enough. Dave Bancroft led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer for the Phillies, and they would get one more in the sixth inning on Bill Killefer’s RBI single. Pittsburgh’s Jesse Tannehill retired 10 of his final 11 batters faced.

Game #3: Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 3 (11 inn.)
The Phillies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, with Beals Becker driving in two of the runs. Eppa Rixey, 0-5 in his first six starts, was cruising with a one-hit shutout through seven innings. But the Pirate offense woke up and scored three times in the eighth. Lefty Davis had a sacrifice fly, Fred Clarke drove in a run with a single and an error scored the game-tying run. In the bottom of the 11th, Ginger Beaumont led off with a double and Honus Wagner singled him home for the walk-off win.

Game #4: Philadelphia 6, Pittsburgh 5
The Pirates looked like they were on the verge of a sweep after taking a 4-0 lead after three innings. Philadelphia turned it around, however. Gavvy Cravath and Beals Becker both hit solo homers in the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half. Cravath and Fred Luderus had back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth to tie the game. Bill Killefer put the Phillies ahead with an RBI single in the sixth, and George Whitted drove in another run in the seventh. The Pirates got one back in the eighth as Tommy Leach doubled and later scored on a balk. But Grover Cleveland Alexander retired the final five Pirate hitters to hold on for the win.
