The 1906 Chicago Cubs became the first team to finish off their 32-game schedule, though they lost three of four to the 1909 Detroit Tigers. The Tigers (16-12) won each of the first three games by one run, including a 1-0 shutout by George Mullin. The Cubs (13-19) completed their season with a win thanks to a Jack Pfiester shutout in the finale. Sam Crawford was the only Tiger regular to hit better than .300, as he went 5-for-15 (.333). Ty Cobb’s season average dropped to .400 after going 3-for-15. Johnny Kling hit .500 (7-for-14) for the Cubs.
Game #1: Detroit 4, Chicago 3
After falling behind 1-0, the Tigers tied it in the fourth on Davy Jones’ RBI single. They then went ahead 3-1 in the fifth with the help of a double by Boss Schmidt and an RBI single by Sam Crawford. Chicago closed the gap to 3-2, but Detroit added a fourth run in the sixth when Donie Bush led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. The Cubs got it back within a run at 4-3 in the eighth on Frank Schulte’s RBI double. They got the potential tying run to second base in the ninth inning but couldn’t tie it up.

Game #2: Detroit 1, Chicago 0
The only run of the game was unearned. Detroit’s Sam Crawford led off with a single and was sacrificed to second, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Donie Bush’s single. Bush stole second, and scored when a Cub outfielder dropped a fly ball. The Cubs got runners into scoring position in three innings, including to third base in the third and fourth, but George Mullin left them there in his three-hit shutout.
