GTOP S1W8: 1914 Braves vs. 1917 White Sox

The 1917 Chicago White Sox were looking for a big result in their penultimate series of the season to boost their hopes of a championship. However, they could only manage a four-game split against the 1914 Boston Braves. The White Sox (17-11) will be paying close attention to the next series between the 1912 Giants (18-6) and 1911 Athletics (14-10). The Giants can clinch the title outright with a sweep, but each Philadelphia win will give the White Sox a chance, since they face the Giants in the final series. Swede Risberg hit .400 (6-for-15) with five RBI for Chicago. Joe Connolly went .500 (7-for-14) with three extra-base hits for Boston (12-16).

Game #1: Boston 3, Chicago 2

Boston built a 3-0 lead on Joe Connolly’s RBI single in the first inning and RBI triple in the sixth, plus Les Mann’s sacrifice fly in the seventh. Lefty Tyler didn’t give up a hit until the fifth and took a shutout to the bottom of the ninth. After two walks, Joe Jackson drove in a run with a single and Chick Gandil had a sacrifice fly to pull Chicago within one run. But Jackson, the potential tying run, ended up stranded on second base.
