GTOP S1W8: 1911 Athletics vs. 1912 Giants

The 1911 Philadelphia Athletics did what was needed to stay alive in the championship race, taking three of four games from the league-leading 1912 New York Giants. The Athletics (17-11) won the opener by one run, and also captured two extra-innings contests from the Giants (19-9). Stuffy McInnis batted 10-for-17 (.588) with five RBI for Philadelphia and Cy Morgan tossed 11 shutout innings in game two. Larry Doyle batted .389 (7-for-18) for the Giants and Jeff Tesreau threw a shutout in game three.

Game #1: Philadelphia 5, New York 4

The Athletics struck first with two runs in the second inning, as starting pitcher Jack Coombs doubled home the first run and Bris Lord had an RBI single for the second. The Athletics led 4-1 after five on Ira Thomas’ RBI single. The Giants closed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh inning. Philadelphia got one more in the top of the ninth as Rube Oldring tripled and scored on Stuffy McInnis singled. They needed that insurance run, as the Giants got one back as Fred Snodgrass doubled and eventually scored on Red Murray’s sacrifice fly, though that would be it.

Game #2: Philadelphia 6, New York 0 (12 inn.)

For 11 innings, Cy Morgan and Christy Mathewson put up zeroes on the scoreboard. Both offenses had their chances, and in fact, both teams had a runner thrown out at home trying to score. Mathewson finally faltered in the top of the 12th as the Athletics scored six times on five hits, including a two-run single by Rube Oldring and a two-run double by Stuffy McInnis. Mathewson lost for the first time in seven starts.

Game #3: New York 3, Philadelphia 0

Jeff Tesreau stopped the slide with a four-hit shutout for the Giants. The teams once again were deadlocked at zero until late. In the top of the seventh with two out, Fred Merkle was hit by a pitch and Art Fletcher homered. Then, in the eighth, Larry Doyle singled and stole second, then scored on Red Murray’s double. Tesreau stranded runners in scoring position in five different innings.

Game #4: Philadelphia 2, New York 1 (13 inn.)

Again, neither team scored until later in the contest. In the top of the seventh, the Giants’ Red Murray singled and stole second, then scored on Jack Meyers’ hit. But in the bottom of the seventh, Danny Murphy led off with a single for the Athletics and eventually scored on Stuffy McInnis’ single. It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 13th. Philadelphia loaded the bases with a single, an error and an intentional walk, and McInnis ended the contest with a base hit.
