The 1914 Boston Braves got shutouts from Lefty Tyler and Bill James, but the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates had big offensive showings in the other two contests as the two teams closed out the campaign with a four-game split. Both teams ended the season with 14-18 records. Charlie Deal hit .364 (4-for-11) with four RBI to lead the Braves, while Tommy Leach went .438 (7-for-16) with four RBI for the Pirates.
Game #1: Boston 1, Pittsburgh 0
Lefty Tyler tossed a five-hit shutout for the Braves in the opener, outdueling Deacon Phillippe, who only gave up four hits. One of them came in top of the sixth when Boston’s Herbie Moran led off with a double. He was sacrificed to third base, then scored on Charles Schmidt’s sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh got runners to third base four different times, including both the eighth and ninth innings, but Tyler repeatedly pitched out of trouble.

Game #3: Pittsburgh 7, Boston 6
The Pirates looked to be on their way to another rout as they went up 6-1 after three innings. Claude Ritchey drove in three of the runs. But Rabbit Maranville hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 6-3, and Charlie Deal cleared the bases with a triple to tie the game in the sixth inning. Pittsburgh went back ahead in the seventh as Honus Wanger singled with two outs and scored on Kitty Bransfield’s double. Boston put runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth but couldn’t score again.

Game #4: Boston 3, Pittsburgh 0
Bill James got the second shutout for the Braves as he scattered six hits. Boston took a 1-0 lead in the third inning without a hit, as a walk, error and RBI groundout by Herbie Moran got the scoring started. Despite having the lead, the Braves didn’t get a hit until the seventh inning. After a couple of walks, Charlie Deal singled to load the bases. James helped his own cause with a two-run single. Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the eighth inning but James got the next batter to fly out.
