The 1912 Boston Red Sox won their final three games against the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies, including a season-ending walk-off home run by Heinie Wagner, to end up the year at .500 (16-16). The Phillies (10-22) cemented their place in the cellar. Tris Speaker hit .500 (8-for-16) to raise his season average to .380 for the Red Sox. Fred Luderus batted .533 (8-for-15) for the Phillies, helping him to end up with a team-best .310 average.
Game #1: Philadelphia 5, Boston 4
Boston built a pair of two-run leads, but couldn’t keep them. Duffy Lewis put the Red Sox ahead 4-2 in the top of the seventh with a two-run double. But the Phillies tied it in the bottom half of the frame on Beals Becker’s sacrifice fly and Bert Niehoff’s run-scoring single. Then, in the eighth, Dave Bancroft reached base on an error, was sacrificed to second, and scored on Fred Luderus’ single, giving the Phillies their first lead of the game. George McQuillan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and got the win in relief.
