GTOP S1W9: 1909 Tigers vs. 1911 Athletics

The 1909 Detroit Tigers and the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics split their four-game series, eliminating both from championship contention. The Athletics (19-13) will finish second or third, with the Tigers (18-14) in third or fourth. Philadelphia needed at least three wins to have a chance, but suffered a heart-breaking 15-inning loss in the finale. The Athletics got a shutout from Jack Coombs in the opener, while Stuffy McInnis batted .375 (6-for-16). Ty Cobb batted .333 (6-for-18) and finished the season hitting .391. He’ll have to wait and see what Shoeless Joe Jackson does to see if that’s good enough for the batting crown.

Game #1: Philadelphia 2, Detroit 0

Philadelphia’s Jack Coombs scattered six hits in the shutout win. Three Tigers got into scoring position, but Coombs left them stranded. The Athletics managed only four hits, two of them coming in a two-run second inning. Rube Oldring led off with a triple and Stuffy McInnis walked. Oldring would score on an Ira Thomas sacrifice fly, and Coombs followed with an RBI double. Coombs ended up a team-best 6-2 in his eight starts.

The Athletics scored first, but the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the third on Jim Delahanty’s RBI single. It stayed 2-1 until the ninth. The Athletics were down to their last out but Ira Thomas delivered a game-tying RBI double. Philadelphia went ahead 3-2 in the top of the 12th, stringing together three hits, the last an RBI single by Home Run Baker. But Detroit tied it in the bottom of the 12th, as Boss Schmidt walked, was sacrificed to second, and scored on Ty Cobb’s single. In the bottom of the 15th, the Athletics got the first two outs.
