Group B had a couple of shocking results, most notably France being dumped from the competition after going 0-3 in group play with only one goal scored. The beneficiary was the New World squad, which was the weakest side on paper but tied England I with seven points for the top spot. England I narrowly claimed first place on goal differential (+4 to +3). Uruguay slipped through in third place by virtue of its win over France.
Leonel Sanchez carried the New World on his back, as he scored six of the team’s seven goals, including a hat trick against Uruguay. He scored two late goals in a 2-2 tie with England I. Dixie Dean tallied goals for England I in all three matches and recorded four in all.
