There weren’t many draws in group play, but there were two right off the bat as the first four Round of 16 matches were contested. Italy I and Argentina II, both group winners, scored game-tying goals in the second half and went on to advance via penalty kicks. They’ll meet in the quarterfinals. Surprisingly, Scandinavia knocked out Brazil II by a 3-1 score. The Netherlands blasted the New World, 5-1. They’ll meet in the other quarterfinal on this side of the bracket.

Italy I 1, Uruguay 1 (Italy I advances 6-5 on penalties)
Uruguay went up early on Jose Leandro Andrade, but Italy tied it up late in regulation on a penalty kick by Giuseppe Meazza. Italy earned a second penalty kick in extra time, but it was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz. The game went to penalties, and it took eight rounds. Italy goalkeeper Dino Zoff made a pair of saves, while Mazurkiewicz had one. In round eight, Claudio Gentile of Italy converted his PK, while Uruguay’s Victor Rodriguez Andrade missed his attempt, ending the match.

The second match followed a similar pattern to the first. Western Europe went on top thanks to a first-half goal by Eden Hazard. Argentina tied it up on Lionel Messi’s strike in the second half. In stoppage time in extra time, Argentina goalkeeper Mariano Andujar saved the day with an against-the-odds spectacular save in the dying moments, sending the contest to to penalties. Western Europe’s Matthias Sindelar missed his attempt in round two. Argentina converted all five penalties, with the clincher coming from Juan Sebastian Veron to start round five.

Brazil led 1-0 at the hour mark thanks for a first-half free kick from Didi. But Scandinavia came roaring back, scoring three times in the final 21+ minutes. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had the equalizer and Gunnar Nordahl notched a brace with goals 15 minutes apart. Pele’s team of greats bows out with an early exit in the knockout round.
