IL World Cup: Round of 16 #2

The other half of the bracket saw two more extra time contests (one going to penalties), and a pair of 2-0 results in regulation. Two of the three group winners advanced, with England I bowing out via penalties to Brazil II. The UK is still represented by the British Isles, however, after they were a 2-0 winner over Germany II. Italy II had a relatively easy time of it against Spain, while Eastern Europe ousted Portugal in extra time.

Brazil II meets Italy II in one quarterfinal (a rematch of sorts of the 1994 World Cup final I attended!) and Eastern Europe will face the British Isles in the other.

Brazil II 3, England I 3 (Brazil II advances 6-5 on penalties)

England heads home after a pair of failures from the penalty spot and a stunning collapse in extra time. Both teams scored once in regulation. England earned a penalty kick in stoppage time, but it was saved by Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel. In extra time, England scored twice to go up 3-1. But Brazil scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including a stoppage-time equalizer from Falcao. The match went to penalties. Both sides made their first five attempts, but in round six, Stanley Matthews put his over the bar. Needing a save to extend the match, England goalkeeper Gordon Banks got a hand on Rivaldo’s attempt, but not enough to keep it from going in the back of the net.
