After some tweaks to the play charts, I made it halfway through week 2 before deciding more changes needed to be made. Scoring’s down. Turnovers are still too low. Favorites aren’t winning enough of the time.
More work is being done to the play charts, and I’ve done some revamping of the offensive and defensive line ratings. I’ll pick up with the second half of week 2 once that’s done.
Here were my results from replaying week 2 of the 2023 NFL season:
Minnesota 24, Philadelphia 23: It was a tale of two halves. Jalen Hurts helped Philadelphia to a 16-0 lead at halftime. Kirk Cousins threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to T.J. Hockenson, but the Eagles still led 23-14 at the end of three quarters. A field goal made it 23-17. Minnesota got into the red zone with a chance to take the lead, but failed on fourth down. Philadelphia couldn’t move the ball on its final possession and punted. Minnesota drove down and the field and Cousins hit Jordan Addison with a 16-yard walk-off game-winning touchdown. (actual: Philadelphia 34-28)
Green Bay 26, Atlanta 16: The Packers took a 16-7 lead at halftime, though the Falcons tied it at 16 at the end of the third quarter. Anders Carlson’s fourth field goal put Green Bay back ahead 19-16, and the Packers iced it with a late touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Christian Watson. (actual: Atlanta 25-24)
Buffalo 30, Las Vegas 3: It was all Bills as Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes, including two short ones to James Cook, and Tyler Bass kicked three field goals. The Raiders’ offensive output consisted of a third-quarter 55-yard field goal from Daniel Carlson. (actual: Buffalo 38-10)
Baltimore 24, Cincinnati 20: Three different Ravens ran for touchdowns, including Gus Edwards’ 17-yard jaunt in the third quarter that put Baltimore ahead 24-14. The Bengals managed a couple of fourth-quarter field goals to close the gap, but could get no closer. (actual: Baltimore 27-24)
Detroit 21, Seattle 13: Seattle took a 13-7 lead early in the fourth quarter on Geno Smith’s TD pass to D.K. Metcalf. But the Lions scored touchdowns on both of their fourth-quarter possessions, first a Jared Goff-to-Josh Reynolds pass, then David Montgomery’s second TD run of the game. Seattle’s final possession ended in midfield as time ran out. (actual: Seattle 37-31)
Houston 14, Indianapolis 10: All the scoring took place in the first half. The Colts’ Isaiah McKenzie took a punt return all the way for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead, but the Texans’ C.J. Stroud threw a pair of touchdown passes to Nico Collins to put Houston in front 14-7. Indianapolis added a field goal late in the half. The second half mostly consisted of punts, with one costly Indianapolis interception. (actual: Indianapolis 31-20)
Jacksonville 20, Kansas City 3: Kansas City could do nothing positive on offense. Trevor Lawrence gave the Jaguars a 10-0 lead at halftime with one touchdown pass. KC’s only points came on a third-quarter field goal to make it 10-3, but Travis Etienne scored on an eight-yard run on the next possession to put Jacksonville ahead 17-3 at the end of the third quarter. (actual: Kansas City 17-9)
Tampa Bay 42, Chicago 27: Chicago took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and jumped out to a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was pretty much all Tampa Bay after that point. Baker Mayfield threw four touchdown passes, two to Mike Evans, while Rachaad White ran for two scores and caught one. The Buccaneers trailed 24-21 at halftime but scored touchdowns on their three straight second-half possessions. (actual: Tampa Bay 27-17)
