GTOP S2W1: 1922 Browns vs. 1927 Yankees

Season two got underway with the 1922 St. Louis Browns and the 1927 New York Yankees splitting a four-game series. Urban Shocker played for both teams and was the winning pitcher in both games one and two. St. Louis managed to outscore (15-14) and outhit (.255-.242) the vaunted Yankee lineup. Both Marty McManus and George Sisler hit .400 (6-for-15) for the Browns. New York was led by Bob Meusel (.467, 7-for-15) and Earle Combs (.438, 7-for-16).

Game #1: St. Louis 7, New York 3

It was tied at 1 after three innings when the Browns scored three times, first on a sacrifice fly and then two more on pitcher Urban Shocker’s double. Ken Williams hit a solo homer in the fourth and Wally Gerber and George Sisler drove in runs in the ninth inning to push the St. Louis lead to 7-1.

Game #2: New York 6, St. Louis 4

The Browns led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, but Lou Gehrig slugged a three-run homer to put the Yankees ahead for good. Babe Ruth and Urban Shocker had sacrifice flies in the seventh and eighth, respectively, to make it 6-2. St. Louis scored twice in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate before Shocker got the final out.

Game #3: St. Louis 3, New York 2 (10 inn.)

The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead as Lou Gehrig had an RBI single in the first and pitcher Dutch Ruether hit a solo homer in the second. But, the Browns tied it up in the bottom of the second as Marty McManus had an RBI singles and pitcher Elam Vangilder had an RBI triple. Then there were zeroes on the scoreboard for the next seven frames and the game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Frank Ellerbe led off with a walk. He was sacrificed to second and Jack Tobin came through with a walk-off single.

Game #4: New York 3, St. Louis 1

Earle Combs gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead with a home run in the top of the third inning, and they never trailed. Waite Hoyt gave up just five hits and one run, which came on Wally Gerber’s RBI double in the third. New York added an insurance run in the sixth on a Babe Ruth solo homer.
