GTOP S2W1: 1925 Senators vs. 1930 Cardinals

The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals will not look back fondly upon their season-opening series with the 1925 Washington Senators, even though it ended up being a draw with each team winning twice. But in their two losses, the Cardinals blew leads of 4-0 and 7-0. Roger Peckinpaugh was the top hitter for the Senators as he went 8-for-15 (.533). Chick Hafey (.357, 5-for-14) led the Cardinals.

Game #1: St. Louis 3, Washington 2

The Cardinals took a pair of one-run leads, but the Senators tied it up both times. In the bottom of the ninth, St. Louis pinch-hitter George Fisher tripled with one out, and Taylor Douthit’s sacrifice fly ended the contest.

Game #2: Washington 5, St. Louis 4 (10 inn.)

The Cardinals built a 4-0 lead after five innings thanks to a Chick Hafey solo homer and a pair of RBI hits from Jim Bottomley. It wouldn’t stand, however, as the Senators scored twice in the sixth, tied it in the eighth on Walter Johnson’s two-run double, and went ahead in the 10th on Roger Peckinpaugh’s RBI single.
