The 1929 Chicago Cubs nearly blew a 4-0 lead but won the opener against the 1922 New York Giants in 14 innings. However, the Giants came back to win the next three to claim the season-opening series. Casey Stengel hit .429 (6-for-14) with five RBI to lead the Giants. Rogers Hornsby batted .438 (7-for-16) for the Cubs.

The Cubs built a 4-0 lead after five innings with the help of a two-run homer and an RBI single by Charlie Grimm. The Giants rallied and tied the game in the eighth after two walks and three consecutive singles. Both teams scored once in the 12th inning. Finally, in the bottom of the 14th, the Cubs’ Mike Cvengros led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out, walk-off single by Rogers Hornsby.
