The series between the 1927 New York Yankees and the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals was an offensive slugfest. There were a total of 17 home runs, nine by the Cardinals and eight by the Yankees. Still, it was New York (5-3) that came away with three wins against St. Louis (3-5).
The Yankees’ Bob Meusel batted .556 (10-for-18) with nine extra-base hits and eight RBI. Babe Ruth hit four home runs (three of them coming in consecutive at-bats) and also drove in eight. The Cardinals’ Chick Hafey homered in all four of the games and batted .562 (9-for-16) with seven RBI.
New York scored just 14 runs in its first series of the season but scored 29 in this one, including 18 in the first two games. Despite losing three of four, the Cardinals also scored 29 runs.
Game #1: New York 9, St. Louis 7
St. Louis hit three home runs, including two in the top of the eighth inning by Taylor Douthit and Chick Hafey, which gave the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. Babe Ruth led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer, and the Yankees ended up tying the game at seven on Pat Collins’ RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, Ruth launched a walk-off two-run home run.

There were five more homers in this one, three by the Yankees. Babe Ruth homered in the first inning, his third straight at-bat hitting the ball out of the park. Bob Meusel hit a pair of two-run homers in the third and sixth innings, the latter making it 9-5. Eight of the 11 Yankee hits went for extra bases, and Lou Gehrig had two doubles and two triples.

Chick Hafey homered for the third straight game to help the Cardinals to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. New York went up 4-3 as Babe Ruth also homered for the third straight game. But the Cardinals scored five times in the bottom of the third, which included a two-run homer from Jim Bottomley, putting St. Louis back in front 8-4. The lead only grew from there and George Watkins had a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Bob Meusel got things started for the Yankees with a two-run triple in the top of the first. The Cardinals’ Chick Hafey tied the game at 2-2 with his fourth homer of the series in the second inning, and St. Louis went up 3-2. New York got a solo homer from Lou Gehrig and an RBI triple from Tony Lazzeri in the third to put New York back up 4-3. The Cardinals’ tied again on Taylor Douthit’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. It stayed that way until the top of the ninth, when Mark Koenig smacked a two-run homer to put New York ahead for good.
