GTOP S2W2: 1919 Reds vs. 1929 Cubs

The 1929 Chicago Cubs rebounded from a rough first week to take three of four games from the 1919 Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs (4-4) got back to .500 while sending the Reds (2-6) into the cellar for the time being. The first three games of the series were all decided by one run, and then Chicago’s Guy Bush pitched a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 rout in the finale.

Rogers Hornsby hit .400 (6-for-15) with four RBI to lead the Cubs. The Reds hit just .182 as a team and were led by Ivey Wingo’s .308 average (4-for-13).

Game #1: Chicago 3, Cincinnati 2

The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when Zack Taylor tripled and winning pitcher Charlie Root singled him home. Hack Wilson hit a solo homer in the eighth to make it 3-1. The ninth inning had some drama. Root was hit by a line drive and had to be removed from the game with two runners on and one out. Reliever Hal Carlson gave up a run-scoring single to pinch-hitter Louis Duncan, but the next Red hitter lined into a double play.

The Reds tied the game at three in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by Heinie Groh and Edd Roush. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs’ Riggs Stephenson led off with a double. After a walk, a wild pitch sent runners to second and third base. An intentional walk loaded the bases. The first two outs were made, but the Reds couldn’t get another one as the Cubs’ Woody English singled home the winning run.
