GTOP S2W3: 1920 Indians vs. 1929 Cubs

The 1920 Cleveland Indians were the best team in the first two weeks of the season, but in week three they found themselves down two games to one against the 1929 Chicago Cubs. However, the Indians (8-4) rallied to win game four and split the series against the Cubs (6-6).

Steve O’Neill batted .500 (7-for-14) with five RBI to lead the Indians. The Cubs’ Riggs Stephenson hit .533 (8-for-15) with seven RBI, while Pat Malone threw a shutout in game two.

Game #1: Cleveland 5, Chicago 2

It was tied 2-2 after seven, but the Indians scored three times in the top of the eighth on four hits. Tris Speaker singled, Elmer Smith had an RBI triple, Bill Wambsganss knocked an RBI double and Steve O’Neill brought home the final run with a single. Indians pitcher Jim Bagby retired the final nine batters he faced.

Game #2: Chicago 4, Cleveland 0

Cubs hurler Pat Malone was magnificent, striking out 10 in a three-hit shutout. The Indians left six runners on base, four of them in scoring position. Riggs Stephenson drove in all four Chicago runs on a pair of two-run singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

Game #3: Chicago 3, Cleveland 2

The Cubs took a pair of one-run leads but the Indians tied it both times. Chicago’s third lead stood up, however. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Kiki Cuyler walked, and then Riggs Stephenson came through again with a run-scoring double. The Indians went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Game #4: Cleveland 6, Chicago 4

After a couple of lead changes and ties, the Cubs took a 4-3 lead after seven innings. Steve O’Neill drove in the first three Cleveland runs. In the bottom of the eighth, the Indians loaded the bases with no one out. Chicago pitcher Guy Bush got the first two outs, but Tris Speaker came through with a bases-clearing double to put the Indians in front for good.
