In 1927, the New York Yankees swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The Yankees almost did the same on the tabletop, winning the first three games. But Pittsburgh earned a walk-off victory in the finale.
The Pirates (2-6) led in all four games, and though the Yankees (8-4) didn’t hit all that well, they did just enough to win the series, which saw three of the four games decided by one run.
Pat Collins had a huge week for New York, batting .562 (9-for-16) with two home runs and seven RBI. Clyde Barnhart also hit .562 (9-for-16) for the Pirates.
Game #1: New York 3, Pittsburgh 2
Joe Harris singled and later scored on a balk to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh. The Yankees finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on Pat Collins’ solo homer. In the bottom of the eighth, Tony Lazzeri and Joe Dugan both had two-out RBI singles to give New York the lead. In the ninth, the Pirates got the tying run to second base with one out and third base with two outs, but couldn’t bring it home.

Game #2: New York 6, Pittsburgh 2
Pittsburgh once again took a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the top of the first. That was it, however. The Yankees tied it on Pat Collins’ two-run single in the second inning. Bob Meusel gave them the lead in the third on a two-RBI single, and Joe Dugan added a sacrifice fly. Tony Lazzeri hit a solo homer in the eighth to pad the lead. Urban Shocker improved to 3-0 after three starts.

Game #3: New York 4, Pittsburgh 3
This game had an interesting start as Yankee starter Dutch Reuther was tossed from the contest in the top of the first after arguing balls and strikes. The Yankees scored first, as Pat Collins hit a two-run homer in the top of the second. But the Pirates scored three times in the bottom half of the frame on pitcher Rey Kremer’s three-run home run. It stayed 3-2 until the eighth. Babe Ruth led off with a single, Lout Gehrig had a triple, and Tony Lazzeri had a single to put New York in front 4-3. The Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Bob Shawkey struck out the final hitter to preserve the New York win.

Game #4: Pittsburgh 3, New York 2
Pat Collins continued his big week with a two-run single in the second inning. But that would be it for the Yankees, who squandered many opportunities as Pirate hurler Vic Aldridge kept them in check. Pittsburgh tied it at two in the bottom of the third on Glenn Wright’s RBI groundout. No one else scored until the bottom of the ninth. Johnny Gooch singled with one out, moved to second base on a groundout, and scored on Lloyd Waner’s walk-off hit.
