The 1922 New York Giants maintained their strong play, winning three of four games against the 1925 Washington Senators to keep the top winning percentage in the league. If not for a Walter Johnson masterpiece that gave the Senators (6-6) a game two victory, New York (6-2) might have won all four.
Somehow the Giants won three games despite hitting .191 and not having any regular hit better than .250 on the week. Muddy Ruel hit .375 (6-for-16) for the Senators, who hit just .195 as a team.
Game #1: New York 2, Washington 1 (12 inn.)
The Senators took the lead on Goose Goslin’s RBI groundout in the third, but they’d only have two more baserunners the rest of the contest. New York tied it in the fifth when Ross Youngs led off with a single and scored on Casey Stengel’s double. It stayed 1-1 until the top of the 12th. Youngs led off with a double and scored on George Kelly’s single.
